Aid cuts: an estimated hundreds of thousands already dead

Measured trendLast checked Sep 30, 2026

Measured trend means: A documented outcome or statistic, not a legal claim. How much of it is caused by administration policy is debated.

Boston University's Impact Counter, a model tracking the USAID cuts, estimated more than 330,000 deaths by June 2025, about 224,000 of them children.

What happened

By January 2026 its estimates included more than 160,000 child deaths from pneumonia, 150,000 from malnutrition and 48,000 from tuberculosis. Researchers warn the true toll may never be known because the systems that tracked deaths were cut too.

Where it stands

These are model estimates, not counted deaths, and they are disputed. The Lancet projection of 14 million deaths by 2030 is in the USAID entry.

The administration's side

The administration says it kept about 1,000 lifesaving programs and moved them to the State Department to run more effectively.
