A meme-coin dinner and family crypto deals while in office
Alleged means: Serious, credible accusations of illegality that no court or watchdog has decided yet.
Trump hosted a dinner for top buyers of his $TRUMP meme coin, and his family's crypto ventures became one of his biggest sources of income.
What happened
His 2025 financial disclosure lists more than $500 million from World Liberty Financial token sales and more than $600 million from meme coins, plus over $50 million from media settlements. Reuters put total Trump family crypto profits at $2.3 billion or more. Over the same period his administration dropped cases against major crypto companies and rolled back crypto rules. On Aug. 14, 2026, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a bank regulator within the Treasury Department, conditionally approved a national trust bank charter for World Liberty Trust Co., which would let the family-backed firm issue its own stablecoin. World Liberty says an entity affiliated with Trump and members of his family owns 38% of the company. The trust company must still meet several conditions before it can open. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said the approval makes Trump the first president to approve, operate and supervise his own bank.
Where it stands
No charges. A former White House ethics lawyer says federal conflict-of-interest law would bar any other executive branch official from doing this.
The administration's side
The White House denies any conflict, and Trump says outside institutions manage his investments. World Liberty says a national charter means permanent supervision by a federal regulator that will outlast the Trump administration, and the regulator's charter applications are reviewed by career staff.
