The RecordExhibit 3
Fired 17 inspectors general at once
Ruled unlawfulLast checked Sep 30, 2026
Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.
The independent watchdogs at nearly every cabinet agency were dismissed with identical two-sentence emails.
What happened
The Inspector General Act requires the president to give Congress 30 days' notice and a case-specific reason before removing one. The emails cited only 'changing priorities.'
Where it stands
Judge Ana Reyes found Trump violated the law, but refused to reinstate the eight who sued, reasoning he could simply fire them again after giving notice.
The administration's side
Government lawyers argued the president can remove inspectors general without cause and doesn't have to wait 30 days.
