Noem's top adviser under Justice Department investigation over DHS contracts, after an inspector general referral

The Justice Department is investigating Corey Lewandowski, who was Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's top adviser until both left in March 2026, over allegations that he used the post for personal gain, according to reports on Oct. 22, 2026, that cite anonymous sources. The inquiry reportedly follows a referral from the department's inspector general.

What happened

Lewandowski served as an unpaid special government employee, a part-time role meant for outside experts, yet The Wall Street Journal reported that he or close associates signed off on nearly all DHS spending decisions over $100,000 and that investigators found he personally signed specific contracts. According to CNN and the Journal, investigators are examining whether he sought financial arrangements with Middle Eastern countries on visa matters and solicited kickbacks from government contractors.

CNN reported in March that the inspector general had opened a broader investigation into contracting under Noem, who now works at the State Department. The inspector general's office says it does not discuss investigative matters.

Where it stands

Pending: a reported criminal investigation, with no charges announced. The reports rest on anonymous sources; the Justice Department has not commented, and Lewandowski's representative says the department has not contacted him. An investigation is not a finding that a crime occurred.

The administration's side

Lewandowski has denied seeking foreign contracts or approving DHS contracts, and his representative denies any wrongdoing. Asked about the investigation, Trump said, 'All I know is, I want my people to be honest.'
