The RecordExhibit 87
A missile strike on a girls' elementary school
Official finding means: A government watchdog or a UN inquiry found a violation.
On the war's first morning, a U.S. Tomahawk missile hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in Minab, Iran. UN investigators count 156 dead, 120 of them children.
What happened
Amnesty's evidence lab concluded U.S. forces could and should have known it was a school. A Bloomberg investigation traced the targeting to outdated imagery of land that was once part of a Revolutionary Guard compound, and to overreliance on AI tools. The same day, a strike on a sports facility in Lamerd where girls were training killed 22 civilians.
Where it stands
In September 2026 the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Iran found reasonable grounds to believe the U.S. committed war crimes in both attacks. A preliminary U.S. military inquiry reportedly found U.S. forces responsible for the school strike.
The administration's side
Trump initially denied U.S. involvement. The U.S. says it does not target civilians, denies the Lamerd strike, and has not acknowledged the UN's findings on the school.
