Outcomes & warning signs

Weather Service lost about 600 staff before deadly floods

Measured trendLast checked Sep 30, 2026

Measured trend means: A documented outcome or statistic, not a legal claim. How much of it is caused by administration policy is debated.

Nearly 600 employees left the National Weather Service in the months before the July 2025 Texas Hill Country floods, which killed more than 120 people, including girls at Camp Mystic.

What happened

Offices covering the area had key vacancies, including a warning coordination role. Former NWS directors had warned the cuts could cost lives.

Where it stands

Be precise here: FactCheck.org found the cuts did not cause the Texas deaths. The local offices were adequately staffed that night and issued timely warnings. The concern is coordination and forecasting capacity going forward.

The administration's side

The White House called the flood an act of God and said the Weather Service did its job.
