Tariffs cost households $1,000 to $1,750 in 2025
Measured trendLast checked Sep 30, 2026
Measured trend means: A documented outcome or statistic, not a legal claim. How much of it is caused by administration policy is debated.
Nonpartisan estimates put the 2025 cost of Trump's tariffs at about $1,000 per household (Tax Foundation) to $1,751 (Yale Budget Lab).
What happened
The New York Fed estimated about 90% of the economic burden fell on U.S. consumers and businesses, not foreign exporters.
Where it stands
Estimates vary by method. The Supreme Court struck down the biggest tariffs in February 2026, but replacement tariffs followed.
The administration's side
Trump says foreign countries pay the tariffs, and frames them as raising revenue and bringing manufacturing jobs home.
