Foreign visitors staying away

Measured trendLast checked Sep 30, 2026

Measured trend means: A documented outcome or statistic, not a legal claim. How much of it is caused by administration policy is debated.

About 9.9 million fewer Canadians visited the U.S. in 2025 than in 2024, the deepest sustained drop in border crossings on record outside the pandemic.

What happened

Canadians pulled back after the tariffs and talk of making Canada the 51st state. Visits from Germany, Denmark and France also fell. The U.S. Travel Association projected a $5.7 billion drop in international visitor spending in 2025.

Where it stands

Border towns, Las Vegas and tourism-dependent businesses report the losses, and there's been no real recovery in 2026.

The administration's side

Trump has said the tariffs are necessary. The travel industry is counting on the World Cup and America's 250th anniversary to bring visitors back.
