This is a Watchlist entry. It is a developing story reported by credible outlets that hasn't reached a court ruling, official finding or documented harm yet. It says what to watch for. If that happens, it moves to The Record.

Federal agents search Rep. Ilhan Omar's home three weeks before her election

DevelopingAdded Oct 12, 2026

Developing means: Reported by credible outlets, but no ruling, official finding or documented harm yet.

Early on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the Washington home of Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota under a warrant the Justice Department says a judge approved, as part of what the department calls an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Omar, one of the administration's sharpest critics on immigration enforcement, is on the ballot Nov. 3.

What happened

The department gave no details of the investigation. Fox News, which first reported the search, said two sources described it as a criminal fraud investigation into the immigration paperwork filed for Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, when she was a child; Axios could not confirm that, and the AP said the nature and scope of the inquiry were unclear. Administration officials had signaled an investigation for months: Vice President JD Vance accused Omar of immigration fraud in March without offering evidence, which she denies, and said in May that he and deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller were discussing how to investigate her; border czar Tom Homan confirmed a criminal probe in mid-September; Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last month there was an ongoing investigation related in part to whether she lied on immigration forms; and Trump told a Tennessee rally that Vance 'and our people' were investigating her.

Trump has called Omar garbage and crooked, said she should leave the country, and recently urged Minnesotans to fight back against the state's Somali community. Republicans have for years repeated an unproven claim that Omar married her brother to help him immigrate, which her office calls disgusting lies. Omar said the search was the latest escalation in a political intimidation campaign, 'an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement', and that she will not be silenced.

House Democratic leaders called it deeply disturbing, and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota objected. The AP noted that the Justice Department has historically avoided public investigative steps involving candidates within 60 days of an election. No Republican lawmaker's reaction appeared in the coverage opened. Omar is a vocal critic of Operation Metro Surge, the immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota.

What to watch for

Whether Omar is charged, and with what; whether she challenges the warrant or the investigation in court and how a judge rules; whether an inspector general or Congress examines the search's timing before the election; and whether the investigation is closed. Charges, a ruling or a finding would move this to The Record. If nothing follows the search, it comes off the list.

The administration's side

The Justice Department says Homeland Security Investigations agents 'executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice' as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, and gave no other details. Homeland Security referred questions to the Justice Department. Mullin has said the investigation concerns in part whether Omar lied on her immigration forms, and Vance has said she committed immigration fraud. The White House did not comment on the search in the coverage opened.
