Banned the AP over 'Gulf of America'

PendingLast checked Oct 5, 2026

Pending means: In court or under criminal investigation right now.

AP reporters were shut out of the Oval Office, Air Force One and White House events because the wire service kept calling it the Gulf of Mexico.

What happened

The White House then took control of the press pool away from the correspondents' association, and later dropped AP, Reuters and Bloomberg from its permanent rotation.

Where it stands

On April 8, 2025, a district judge ruled the ban unconstitutional and ordered the AP's access restored. On June 6, 2025, a panel of the D.C. Circuit put that order partly on hold, 2 to 1, while the appeal continues, letting the White House keep the AP out of the Oval Office and other restricted spaces for now. The two judges in the majority wrote that the White House is likely to win because those spaces are not forums opened for private speech. The case is still going.

The administration's side

The press secretary accused AP of spreading lies. The administration says access to spaces like the Oval Office is a privilege, not a right.
