The RecordExhibit 7
Mass firings of probationary federal workers
Ruled unlawfulLast checked Sep 30, 2026
Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.
The federal personnel office directed agencies to fire probationary employees, generally those with less than a year in their jobs. About 200,000 people were in that status.
What happened
Many received template emails that falsely cited poor performance, a mark that follows them to future jobs.
Where it stands
Judge William Alsup found the firings likely unlawful, saying the personnel office had no authority 'under any statute in the history of the universe' to fire other agencies' workers.
The administration's side
Trump calls the federal workforce bloated and sloppy.
