The RecordExhibit 38
Fired the official who reported bad jobs numbers
Criticized means: Legal, or a policy choice, but widely condemned.
Hours after a weak jobs report, Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, claiming without evidence the numbers were rigged to make him look bad.
What happened
The report showed 73,000 jobs added in July and revisions cutting 258,000 from May and June. McEntarfer had been confirmed 86 to 8, with JD Vance voting yes. Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis said firing the statistician over accurate numbers would be a problem.
Where it stands
Commissioners can be removed. The concern is political pressure on the government's economic data.
The administration's side
Trump says the numbers were phony and that important data must be fair and not manipulated for political purposes.
