Trying to cut off the consumer protection bureau's funding

Ruled unlawfulLast checked Oct 1, 2026

Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.

Budget director Russ Vought moved to cut off funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which Congress set up to be funded through the Federal Reserve.

What happened

Shutting off the money would have effectively closed the agency that handles complaints about banks, lenders and debt collectors.

Where it stands

Three federal judges have ruled against it. The latest, in September 2026, found Vought violated the separation of powers by seizing Congress's power of the purse.

The administration's side

Vought argued the law didn't allow funding while the Fed was operating at a loss.
