The RecordExhibit 40
Taking over policing in the nation's capital
Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.
Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington, D.C., and sent National Guard troops, including from other states, to patrol the city.
What happened
Guard troops were deputized as special deputy U.S. Marshals, and the city's attorney general said out-of-state troops were operating as a federal military police force.
Where it stands
Judge Jia Cobb ruled in November 2025 that the deployment violates the Constitution and illegally intrudes on local authority over law enforcement, and ordered it ended, pausing her order for appeal.
The administration's side
The White House says the president has authority to protect federal assets and that the operation sharply cut violent crime.
