Hundreds killed seeking food at U.S.-backed aid sites
Alleged means: Serious, credible accusations of illegality that no court or watchdog has decided yet.
After Israel blocked supplies into Gaza for more than two months, the U.S.- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation took over food distribution. In its first month, the UN recorded 509 killings near its sites.
What happened
By July, more than 875 people had been killed seeking aid, at least 674 of them near GHF sites, according to the UN rights office and Gaza's health ministry. The UN said Israeli forces had shelled and shot at people trying to reach the sites, and an American security contractor told the BBC he saw colleagues fire on Palestinians.
Where it stands
The UN called the model inherently unsafe and demanded an independent investigation. Major aid groups refused to work with it. In May 2026 the Financial Times reported, citing three people familiar with the inquiry, that the State Department's inspector general is investigating how the foundation spent a $30 million U.S. grant; the office would neither confirm nor deny an investigation. The foundation suspended operations in October 2025 and is now defunct.
The administration's side
GHF said it delivered tens of millions of meals and blamed Hamas for unrest and deadlier attacks near UN convoys. A GHF spokesperson said the group was unaware of any inspector general inquiry and had bought food at reasonable prices.
