Troops and Marines sent into Los Angeles
Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.
Over Governor Gavin Newsom's objection, Trump sent about 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles during protests against immigration raids.
What happened
Soldiers set up perimeters and traffic blockades and did crowd control alongside immigration agents. Asked in court what limits applied to the president's power to do this, DOJ lawyers did not name any.
Where it stands
Judge Charles Breyer ruled in September 2025 that the deployment willfully violated the Posse Comitatus Act, finding there was no rebellion and civilian police could handle the protests.
The administration's side
The administration said troops were needed to protect federal agents and property during violent protests.
