An ICE agent kills Renee Good in Minneapolis

PendingLast checked Oct 5, 2026

Pending means: In court or under criminal investigation right now.

During Operation Metro Surge, an immigration crackdown in the Twin Cities, ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good.

What happened

Federal officials pulled out of a joint investigation with Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and withheld evidence, including the car she was driving and the agent's identity. Trump called Minnesota officials crooked. The Justice Department said a civil rights investigation wasn't warranted. Video shows Ross firing as Good was trying to drive away. Agents did not let a man who said he was a physician help her, and no one attempted CPR for more than 10 minutes, according to MPR News.

Where it stands

Minnesota sued for the evidence and received it in July 2026. Hennepin County prosecutors say they now have enough to make a charging decision; none has been announced. On Oct. 1, 2026, Good's family filed two civil lawsuits in federal court: one naming the United States as the only defendant, and one against eight individuals, including Ross, Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem and Greg Bovino. The suits allege wrongful death and a conspiracy to interfere with civil rights, and say Ross and other agents at the scene violated several of the Department of Homeland Security's own policies.

The administration's side

Then-Secretary Kristi Noem called Good a terrorist who tried to hit Ross with her car, and Trump and other officials say Ross acted in self-defense.
