Executive orders to punish law firms

Ruled unlawfulLast checked Sep 30, 2026

Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.

Trump targeted law firms tied to his opponents, stripping security clearances, barring their lawyers from federal buildings and threatening their clients' government contracts.

What happened

Perkins Coie, which represented Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign, was first. Several other firms were hit; some sued, while others cut deals with the White House to make the orders go away.

Where it stands

Judge Beryl Howell permanently struck down the Perkins Coie order in May 2025 as a violation of free speech and due process. Other challenged orders were blocked too.

The administration's side

Trump accused the firms of weaponizing the justice system against him and his allies.
