A 5-year-old in a bunny hat, sent to a Texas detention center

Ruled unlawfulLast checked Sep 30, 2026

Ruled unlawful means: A court ruled against it. Some rulings are on appeal.

Immigration agents in suburban Minneapolis detained 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, who had a pending asylum claim, and sent them to a family detention center in Dilley, Texas.

What happened

School officials and neighbors said agents used the preschooler as bait, having him knock on his own front door so his mother would come out.

Where it stands

Judge Fred Biery ordered them released, blaming a government chasing daily deportation quotas even if it meant traumatizing children.

The administration's side

DHS says ICE didn't target the boy, that his mother refused to take him, and that his father wanted him along.
