Tariffs on NATO allies until Denmark sells Greenland

CriticizedLast checked Sep 30, 2026

Criticized means: Legal, or a policy choice, but widely condemned.

Trump announced tariffs on eight NATO allies, set to rise from 10% to 25%, until a deal is reached for the 'complete and total purchase' of Greenland.

What happened

The targets, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands and Finland, had sent troops for exercises in Greenland. Trump would not rule out taking the island by force. Thousands protested in Nuuk and Copenhagen.

Where it stands

No ruling. A bipartisan congressional delegation flew to Copenhagen to show support for Denmark.

The administration's side

Trump says the U.S. needs Greenland for national security and his Golden Dome missile shield, and that Denmark can't protect it from Russia or China.
